George W. Spotswood letter to the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia [manuscript], 1829 July 4.

Spotswood writes that he is leaving the University "in a few days" and resigns his position as hotelkeeper. He mentions that he, his wife and daughter have received many "insults" during the past four months, which he can forgive, but never forget. Spotswood notes that he informed Dr. Dunglinson, the Chairman of the Faculty, of these insults to no result and that Dunglinson "should blush when he recollects the manner in which he treated Mrs. Spotswood." When Mr. Lomax was Chairman, "impartiality governed all the decisions of this institution" but that is not the case with Dunglinson. Spotswood tells the Board that when he came to the University the "horrid situation" of his house produced a fever that killed "3 valueable [sic] negroes." He reminds the Board that the students were allowed to leave the University during the fever and as such he did not receive payment from them for a certain period. Spotswood asks the Board to pay this money to Mrs. Spotswood, and further, to allow her to remain in the house until July 20.
